Massages as Treatment


Massage used to be considered a luxury offered only through upscale spas and health clubs. However, massage therapy is beginning to be more commonly considered a component of complimentary and alternative medicine. Due to the benefits of this therapy, massage is increasingly being offered as standard treatment for a variety of medical conditions and situations. While there is evidence that massage therapy is an effective treatment for anxiety, muscle tension, pain, and stress reduction, more research is required to confirm its’ benefits.1


With that said, some studies have managed to show that massages therapy can be helpful for:1

  • Digestive disorders
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia related to stress
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Soft tissue strains or injuries
  • Sports injuries
  • Temporomandibular joint pain


In addition the benefits that massage therapy can provide for specific conditions, many patients enjoy getting massaged because it often produces feelings of closeness, caring and comfort; but this is not without risk.2 If you suffer from any of the following conditions, be advised to contact you physician to ensure that the risks associated to getting a massage dont outweigh the benefits:2

  • Any bleeding disorders
  • Taking of blood-thinning medication
  • Burns or healing wounds
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Fractures
  • Severe osteoporosis
  • Severe thrombocytopenia


Most of the serious problems that are caused by massage are a result of too much pressure; if any aspect of the massage doesn’t feel right or is too painful, you should not hesitate to speak up.


While you might find yourself to be a bit sore the following day, massage therapy is nonetheless a great way to indulge and pamper.
